The global technology landscape is transforming at an unprecedented pace. Innovations in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and clean energy are not only driving economic change but also reshaping global competition, as nations and corporations strive to secure leadership in the technologies that will shape the next industrial era.

At this pivotal moment, it is essential for countries and policymakers to reassess their long-term and comprehensive strategies for science and technology development. How have technological revolutions historically influenced the rise and decline of great powers? By what mechanisms do major innovations generate economic growth? And how should governments interpret and prioritise emerging technologies? In China’s case, how does it perceive its position in the next industrial revolution, and what insights can be drawn from its recent key technology policies?

The next policy meeting organised by the EU SME Centre and European Chamber will bring together leading voices from academia and industry to explore these critical questions. Jeffrey Ding, Assistant Professor of Political Science at George Washington University, will share his GPT Diffusion Theory and key insights from his recent book Technology and the Rise of Great Powers: How Diffusion Shapes Economic Competition. Bringing in a China-focused perspective, Tom Nunlist from Trivium China will unpack the country’s latest developments in science and technology policy. Together, the discussion will shed light on how innovation, policy, and global competition intersect, and what these shifts mean for China and the world in the years ahead.
