Hainan Province is set to become the largest special economic zone in China and an important node on the Maritime Silk Road, as part of the Belt and Road Initiative. Since the island is located in the South of China, it is strategically well placed to strengthen the integration with other ASEAN countries.
China has transformed Hainan island into a Free Trade Port liberalizing the cross-border flows of trade, people and capital. The FTP aims to become a world-class international market easily accessible for foreign companies from all over the globe. In order to achieve this, Hainan will adopt special policies, such as lower import duties, lower company taxes, favourable personal income taxes and less strict visa requirements for tourists and business people.
