Advanced Materials in China: Tackling a Changing China for Austrian SMEs

A delegation of 22 Austrian experts from the advanced materials sector visited Beijing on January 17th 2016, hosted by the Science and Technology Section of the Austrian Embassy.

EU SME Centre Business Development Advisor Rafael Jimenez delivered a briefing to attendees, explaining what it means for Austrian SMEs tackling a changing China, focussing on the real opportunities, challenges, as well as informing them of the resources and tools available at the Centre.

“It really gave a good overview of the topic with a lot of practical advice and useful links for further information” said Mr Helmut Spitzl, Acting Director, Attaché for Science and Technology at the Austrian Embassy Beijing.

China has made advanced materials a top priority in its development agenda for the coming years. Already prioritised under 'new materials' in the 12th five-year plan, we expect the sector to appear again in the 13th Five-year Plan within the strategic industries.

Advanced materials are also an important element of the ‘Made in China 2025’ plan, which can be described quoting Premier Li Keqiang when presenting the Annual Government Work report of 2015 as “…seeking innovation-driven development, apply[ing] smart technologies…and redouble[ing] our efforts to convert China into a manufacturer of quality rather than quantity”.

As additional support, the EU SME Centre handed out The China's Stakeholders Guide on Advanced Materials – a useful list of organisations in China related to the advanced materials sector.

The guide provides links to institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences related to materials, as well as associations and societies belonging to the China Association for Science and Technology and actively working on advanced materials. It also includes key journals and magazines in the field, as well as universities researching advanced materials together with a description of the specific areas of advanced materials in which they are working.
