On 28 September 2017, the Director of the EU SME Centre Mr Chris Cheung, was interviewed by the CEO of DHgate, Ms Diane Wang on the “opportunities and challenges of doing business via cross-border e-commerce”.

DHgate is a Chinese cross-border B2B platform established in 2004 whose aim is to help Chinese SMEs realise globalisation through e-commerce and to make online trade simpler.

During the interview, Chris first discussed the primary challenges faced by European SMEs when entering the Chinese market. “For SMEs, one of the biggest challenges is gathering information on the market,” Chris said, the other two primary challenges are “finding the right partners to help distribute their products” and “understanding the market access requirements”.

Then he pointed out that the digitalisation and pioneering efforts that China has carried out in e-commerce present many new opportunities for SMEs. He said that according to recent data, USD 8.6 trillion of mobile payments have been carried out annually in China, compared with USD 112 billion in the United States.
